One of the most interesting examples I've seen of an attempt at
something like this was a short one hour 16mm film called "The Brig"
from the early/mid 60's.
 
It showed (if I remember correctly), what looked like intense
documentary footage of a group of young marines at a training-camp
barracks and the verbal and physical abuse they go through.  In
actuality, the entire film was staged by a group called the "Living
Theatre".
