Some other possibilities for the "redemption" of men by self-sacrificing women:
Hitchcock's SUSPICION (and maybe VERTIGO too), A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN,
"The Mother and the Law" sequences of INTOLERANCE, Satyajit Ray's DEVI (but
a rather complicated example), Mizoguchi's UGETSU, Zhang Yimou's THE STORY
OF QUI JU, the different versions of MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, Mitchell Leisen's
HOLD BACK THE DAWN (script by Brackett and Wilder), among others.
 
Then there are examples of *failed* redemption: eg. CHILDREN OF PARADISE,
the various versions of A STAR IS BORN and numerous films noirs.  Oshima's
VIOLENCE AT NOON and CRUEL STORY OF YOUTH offer interesting and disturbing
variations.
