This has nothing to do with the switcher in "That Thing You Do," but the
comment on that film reminded me of my experience seeing it.
 
This summer I was in Katowice, Poland when I saw the film perched in the
balcony of an gigantic theater.  The film attempts to show how quaint life
in the US in the fifties was.  However, as the camera showed the bulbous
b/w tv's and clunky washers, I could see the native filmgoers marvelling at
US technology.
 
I don't think we know how well off we are.
