Call for Proposals
The Society for Cinema and Media Studies announces its call for proposals
and papers for the 2009 Conference, May 21-24, to be held at Josai
International University in central Tokyo. Josai University (JU) was
founded by late Finance Minister Mikio Mizuta in 1965. Josai International
University (JIU), a separate campus, was founded in 1992 and together both
universities have been at the forefront of media studies and women's studies
in Japan, as well as in a wide range of traditional and newer disciplines.
The recently-completed Tokyo Kioichô campus of JIU houses the University
administration, but also includes classrooms, presentation rooms, meeting
spaces, reception areas, a theater, a health center, café, and daycare
facilities. Located in central Tokyo, the Tokyo Kioichô campus provides
convenient access to most major areas of Tokyo and the area surrounding the
campus includes restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops.

The 2009 and 2010 SCMS Conferences will be part of a year-long celebration
of "SCMS at 50." In recognition of the increasing international scope of
SCMS and the growth of media studies as a discipline world-wide, we will
begin this year of celebration by holding our 2009 conference in Tokyo and
will conclude by holding our 2010 conference in Los Angeles, the historic
home of the "Hollywood" film and television industries.
The themes of the 2009 and 2010 SCMS conferences will be: "SMCS at 50/Tokyo:
Mobilizing the Future/Screening the Past," and "SCMS at 50/LA: Archiving the
Future/Mobilizing the Past." The topic for the Tokyo conference is inspired
by a city that has screens the size of its buildings and is filled with
people carrying screens the size of their palms; the topic for Los Angeles
conference, in tribute to the many archives available in Los Angeles, will
have us address the half-century behind us as SCMS prepares for prospect of
our discipline's future. Panels, papers, and workshops that explore issues
of mobility, archives, and screen culture as well as the past and future of
the field will be given special consideration.
To propose a paper, panel or workshop online, log in and navigate to the
Submission Forms link under Conference in the main menu. The Tokyo
conference submission deadline for all open call paper, panel, and workshop
proposals is midnight (CST) September 1, 2008.
SCMS Student Travel Grants are available to student members who participate
in the conference by presenting a paper, chairing a panel or workshop, or
participating in a workshop. The application forms will be available on the
website after the proposal acceptance and decline notices have been sent in

Conference Bulletin Board
To encourage and facilitate exchange, the Society operates an online
Bulletin Board (located under Conference in the main menu) on which you can
propose panel or workshop topics to solicit participants. To submit a
posting to the Bulletin Board, please complete the online Bulletin Board
Submission Form and submit. If you are unable to post your announcement
online, please send the required information to [log in to unmask] and the
home office will post the announcement for you.
Please note:
1. Deadline for Bulletin Board announcements is July 15, 2008.
2. Only ONE submission form per person, please.
3. Chairs/organizers must notify individuals whether they have been accepted
or rejected by August 15, 2008.
4. Chairs/organizers are responsible for submitting the entire panel or
workshop form by September 1, 2008.
