1.  Review of Helen Martin and Sam Edwards, -New Zealand Film

2. Russell Campbell, "Prostitution and film censorship in the USA"
Discusses attempts from the thirties to the sixties to ban all
representation of prostitution from American films, demonstrating how
this became increasingly difficult.
 
Re-runs:
3. Herthe Thiele and Mädchen in Uniform, translated by Leonie Naughton.
Heide Schlupmann and Karola Gramann introduce a long interview with
Herthe Thiele, star of -Mädchen in Uniform-  (Germany 1931), in which
she discusses the production process and her own performance.
 
4.  Nicole Brenez,  The Ultimate Journey: remarks on contemporary theory
This article deals with the recent history of theory and the relation
between theory and history. It traces one path through some of the work on
film theory in France during the eighties and early nineties, paying
particular attention to the contributions of Jean-Louis Schefer, Gilles
Deleuze and Jean-Luc Godard and to questions of the powers of the image,
the figurability of the subject and the thinkable relations between film

5. Hu Ke, Copntemporary film theory in China, translated by Wang Chen
and Chris Berry
Discusses the response of Chinese film scholars to contemporary western
film theory, from its first introduction in 1980, through attempts to
apply it to Chinese productions, to the recognition of postmodernist
influences.

Ken Coldicutt,  “Cinema and capitalism (1935) and “-Turksib-:  building
a railroad (1933)
Articles by an Australian left-wing activist who believed in the
important role of film in educating the people and spreading
anti-capitalist ideas. Introduced by Deane Williams.
