If my memory is correct, the Alan Smithee monicker was worked out by the
screen director's guild as an "out" for director's that were particularly
unpleased with a production.
 
Maybe Tim Burton will do a movie bio of Smithee someday and we'll see
Smithee film fests making the rounds....
