Rudolf Arnheim wrote an essay in 1938 called "A New Laocoon:
Artistic composites and the talking film", it's contained in his book
_Film as Art_ . This covers the aesthetic issues and so forth but not
really popular opinion. It does raise most of the problems that many
had with the idea of introducing sound to what was a purely visual
medium.
