I was reading the recent Film Quarterly (Spring 1996) when my
curiosity was piqued by a comment in David Ehrenstein's article, "Film
in the Age of Video": "Recently the Los Angeles Times reported
comments made during a debate on the Internet between video supporters
and film 'purists' about the two mediums."

Hmmmm, "a debate on the Internet," I pondered... Could it be
SCREEN-L?

So, I looked up the piece in the LA Times (Jan 1, 1996; p. F8):
"Small Screen for Movies is a Big Issue for Some Viewers." Sure
enough the entire piece centers on a SCREEN-L discussion centering on
comments by Gene Stavis and Mike Frank.

Unfortunately, they refer to SCREEN-L by its subtitle ("the Film and
TV Studies Discussion List") rather than its real name, but still! I
believe that this is SCREEN-L's first appearance in a major
metropolitan newspaper!

Thanks, Gene and Mike, for being such lively, interesting combatants
that the Times took note. 'Course the Times neglected to mention that
we've been having such lively discussions right here for the past five
years!
