Dear Colleagues,

I have just posted a Call for Papers for a possible session on the films of Michael Haneke for the 2014 Annual Conference of the Modern Language Association (January 9-12, 2014). In keeping with the theme of “Vulnerable Times” announced by the MLA’s new President, Marianne Hirsch, the proposed session title is “Michael Haneke: Vulnerable Minds, Bodies, Spectators.” CFP text reads “Human vulnerabilities to modernity, emotion, violence, age, etc. in Haneke’s films. How Haneke engages/exploits/critiques spectators’ own vulnerabilities. Individual and comparative analyses welcomed.”

The official CFP description calls for abstracts of 250-500 words to be submitted to me by email no later than March 15, 2013. Participants have to be members of the MLA as of April 7, 2013. Also please note that this session requires approval by the MLA Program Committee, so notification that the panel has been approved will not come until early June. If approval is forthcoming, I will ask participants to submit completed papers by December 1 so that the session format can promote interactive discussion among panelists and those attending. Given the Academy Award nominations of Amour (2012) for Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay and of Emmanuelle Riva for Best Actress and Haneke for Best Directing, the session topic seems timely.

I hope that you will consider submitting an abstract or pass this note on to others who might be interested. I welcome any questions or queries sent to me at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
