THE VELVET LIGHT TRAP
A CRITICAL JOURNAL OF FILM AND TELEVISION STUDIES
 
CALL FOR PAPERS:  IDEOLOGIES
 
Recent areas of inquiry have problematized the practice of ideological
textual analysis in film and television studies.
 
Many scholars in cultural studies, feminist studies, reception studies,
queer studies, ethnic, race, and post-colonial studies have argued that
texts are polysemous; spectators are elusive, multiple, contradictory, and
often unruly.  Hegemonic meanings are not merely imposed upon a passive
viewers.  Rather, spectators are historical, material subjects with agency
and desires who actively "make meaning" out of texts. In addition,
industries and contexts are as equally important as the text "itself" when
dealing with issues of "meaning."  Moreover, related theoretical
interventions
by these scholars have shown that the classroom is an undeniably
politicized
space where ideologies are reproduced, circulated, and enacted.
 
With these problems in mind, how do we address the question of continuing
to do ideological textual analyses after the intervention of this
scholarship?
Is there a place in the academy for this type of scholarship?  Does
ideological textual analysis need to be transformed?  How?  What are the
implications for this in terms of pedogogy?
 
Possible topics for submission:
 
Exemplary 'New ideological analyses' that attempt to solve parts
   of these problems
Histories and theories of ideologies
Methodologies for bridging the theoretical gaps between
   text/context/industry and/or spectator/audience member and the
implications
   these may have for ideological analysis.
Essays that discuss the ideological underpinnings of ideological
   interpretation; psychoanalysis; feminist theory; queer theory; ethnic,
race,
   and post-colonial theory; poststructuralism/postmodernism; ethnography;
   and reception theory as they apply to media studies.
Critical pedagogy, ideology, and the media studies classroom.
 
 
Papers should be between 15 and 25 pages, double-spaced, in MLA style.
All
submissions are due January 15, 1998.  All submissions will be refereed
by the journal's Editorial Advisory Board.
