With the recent handover/return of Hong Kong to mainland China's control,
this is an especially opportune time to look at the past, present, and
future of Hong Kong film. For a special issue devoted to this topic
(tentatively scheduled for publication in late 1998), the journal _Post
Script_ invites manuscripts which cumulatively look at Hong Kong movies
and the Hong Kong movie industry from a variety of methodological and
Suggested topics/approaches include, but are not limited to:
1. Institutional analyses (e.g., the organization of the movie industry in
different historical eras; studies of film production companies and
distributors; film exhibition; the contemporary industry in transition).
2. Studies of directors, actors, and other film workers.
3. Analyses of stylistic tendencies in Hong Kong movies.
4. Studies of film movements (e.g., the Hong Kong New Wave), genres amd

6. Considerations of the Hong Kong movie audience (domestic and

English-language scholarship (e.g., martial arts movies of the 1960s and
1970s; the relationship between Cantonese and Mandarin film production;

We also encourage the submission of substantial interviews with film
industry personnel, English translations of significant, previously
published essays and articles (with copyright permissions secured), book
reviews, and relevant filmographies and annotated bibliographies.
The issue will be published in English; nonetheless, we welcome the
submission of essays originally written in Chinese (or other languages)
which have not been previously published. We regret that an English
version of such materials will be required for the monolingual guest
editor to read them; however, if a more polished translation is needed of
manuscripts selected for publication, this _may_ be possible to arrange.
Manuscript length: maximum 25 pages, including documentation.
