Laura and Screen-L'ers:

Would not at least the original _Parent Trap_ (1961) film from Disney
qualify? Possibly also the Disney remake (1998), which I've not seen.

The characters of Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers (both played by
Hayley Mills) are identical twins, separated in infancy when their
parents divorced. When they meet at summer camp, there is immediate
antipathy, but eventually they discover their relationship and at the
end of the summer they switch places, each going to the home of the
other, with the mission of reuniting their parents, which, after much
business they do.

The film is based on the German children's book _Das doppelte Lottchen_
[The double Lotte], by Erich Kastner (1940), which has apparently also
been filmed in Germany. So, if a children's book will do for a
"literary work" I think it fits.

Laura Carroll asks for: . . . a single actor plays two different parts
. . . the characters look alike or identical . . . important . . . part
of the story that the two characters look alike . . . but it's clear
that they are not, in the fiction, the same person . . . To be of use to
me the film must, must, must be adapted from a literary work (but not a
play), and inherit the look-alikes from it.

Leslie, once upon a time a big Hayley Mills fan
