An groundbreaking study of French cinema of the1930s which
examines the role of émigré filmmakers such as Anatole Litvak, Billy Wilder,
Robert Siodmak, Victor Trivas  and Fritz Lang within their adopted nation's film
culture. Central to this cinema was the role of Paris as a centre of production, exhibition and representation. The book therefore juxtaposes analysis of the émigrés'  cinematic portrayal of Paris with wider social, cultural and political debates about the modern city. It also considers the social dimensions of exile by linking the reception of the émigré filmmakers, many of whom were Jewish, to political concerns of the period. Phillips' analysis of the specificities of Parisian cinematic culture at a time of great social change opens up a new field of enquiry in film history: the inter-relationship between national identity and the cultural representation of place.

 City of Darkness, City of Light  est une étude importante sur le cinéma français des années 30 qui examine le rôle de cinéastes émigrés tels que Anatole Litvak, Billy Wilder, Robert Siodmak, Victor Trivas et Fritz Lang au sein de la culture cinématographique de leur pays d'adoption. Paris a joué un rôle primordial dans ce cinéma, en tant que lieu de production, d'exploitation et de représentation. Ce livre analyse donc la manière dont ces émigrés ont dépeint Paris mais propose aussi des débats plus étendus sur la société, la culture et la politique de la ville moderne. Cette étude considère également les dimensions sociales de l'exil en associant l'accueil de ces cinéastes émigrés, juifs pour la plupart, avec les préoccupations politiques de l'époque. Phillips analyse avec talent les caractéristiques de la culture cinématographique et parisienne durant cette période de bouleversement social et nous entraîne vers un nouveau champ de recherches dans l'histoire du cinéma: la corrélation entre l'identité nationale et la représentation culturelle du lieu.
