In addition to the AFI listings already mentioned, you can also easily
do term searches on the Internet Movie Data Base: http://www.imdb.com

I'd also suggest a look at such books as Molly Haskell's FROM REVERENCE
TO RAPE, just as a starting place.

Otherwise, a few fairly significant films that come to mind:

Griffith's INTOLERANCE (and WAY DOWN EAST, sort of)
Lois Weber's WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN?, etc.
Lillian Gish in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, sort of
Shelly Winters in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and LOLITA
All versions of STELLA DALLAS, especially the Barbara Stanwyck version
Various versions of LITTLE WOMEN
TO EACH HIS OWN, with Olivia de Haviland
NOW, VOYAGER, with Gladys Cooper (vs. daughter Bette Davis)
Davis in THE LITTLE FOXES
Myrna Loy in the THIN MAN sequels (not the original) and THE BEST YEARS
OF OUR LIVES
Margaret Whycherly in WHITE HEAT
A number of Hitchcock films besides PSYCHO: NOTORIOUS, STRANGERS ON A
TRAIN, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, TO CATCH A THIEF, MARNIE, THE BIRDS
Dolores Costello in THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and Agnes Moorehead's
brief but telling appearance in CITIZEN KANE
For something rather loopy, Ethel Barrymore in MY SON JOHN
Angela Lansbury in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and THE WORLD OF HENRY
ORIENT
KRAMER VS. KRAMER
ORDINARY PEOPLE

A few foreign films, for contrast?
Pudovkin's MOTHER
Dreyer's DAY OF WRATH
Bergman's THE SILENCE, AUTUMN SONATA, FANNY AND ALEXANDER, etc.
Ozu's TOKYO STORY and others
Imamura's INSECT WOMAN
Chabrol's STORY OF WOMEN
Fassbinder's MOTHER KUSTERS GOES TO HEAVEN, etc.

Various versions of MEDEA!

Subject: motherhood films

A student working on a senior thesis has approached me looking for film
suggestions. Her thesis is on images of motherhood across the history of
Hollywood cinema. I'm generally pretty feeble at generating film titles
off
the top of my head, but it seems a number of people on this list are
quite
good at it. So if some of those people would be kind enough to e-mail
her a
few suggested film titles, she'd be very grateful. Her e-mail address is
[log in to unmask] and her name is Katie Hakenewerth. Thanks in advance
for any help you can give her.
