I recommend these terrific films:

Quartier Mozart (Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Senegal, 1992)
-a contemporary trickster tale about a woman who uses sorcery to inhabit a
man's body

Paris Is Burning (Jennie Livingston, US, 1990)
-drag as the performance of gender, class, and race

Father Son and Holy War, part 2 (Anand Patwardhan, India, 1994)
-examine religious and military issues in the construction of
masculinity in India, as well as the importation of "American" masculinity
in the likes of Hulk Hogan.

On Boys, Girls, and the Veil (Yousry Nasrallah, Egypt, 1994)
-a lively documentary on the veil debate. (Try Arab Film
Distribution in Seattle)

The Silences of the Palace (Moufida Tlatli, Tunisia, 1994)
-a gorgeous and sensuous film dealing with women's place in Islam, among
other things, directed by a woman.

The Watermelon Woman (Cheryl Dunye, US, 1996)
Black lesbian filmmaker discovers a black lesbian actor in the
archives (Kino?)

And Still I Rise (Ngozi Onwurah, UK, 1995)
-a provocative 30 minute film on African diaspora women's sexuality and
embodiment (Women Make Movies)
