Notice:

In 1988 there was a special issue of "American historical review",
considering how history and film intersect. Issue 6 of "Screening the
past" (uploaded a few days ago) contains a special section guest edited
by Arthur Lindley and Anthony Guneratne, revisiting that issue of AHR.
We republish two of the AHR articles: "Historiography and
historiophoty", by Hayden White, and "History in images/history in
words: reflections on the possibility of really putting history onto
film", by Robert A. Rosenstone.

We also include current responses to the questions raised by the AHR
forum. These are:
- Pierre Sorlin, "Endgame?"
- Thomas Elsaesser, "'One train may be hiding another': private history,
memory and national identity";
- Vivian Sobchack, "The insistent fringe: moving images and the
palimpsest of historical consciousness";
- Roberta Pearson, "Conflagration and contagion: eventilization and
narrative structure";
- Marcia Landy, "History on trial: the case of Porzus";
- Robert Burgoyne, "Prosthetic memory/ traumatic memory: Forrest Gump
(1994)"
- Maria Wyke, "Ancient Rome and the traditions of film history";
- Robert Rosenstone, "Reflections on Reflections on history in
images/history in words".

In addition to the special section revisiting the AHF Forum, the
"Classics" section contains translations of two short pieces by Jean
Deprun: "Cinema and identification" and "Cinema and transference",
translated by Annabelle J. de Cro˙, and introduced by Harriet Margolis.

In Reruns, we publish the English language sections of a booklet issued
by the Pusan International Film Festival, including short pieces on "The
beginnings and development of early Asian film", and on the early cinema
of China and Hong Kong, India, Japan and Korea.

There are reports on the Stirling Documentary Conference and on the
archival restoration of a Phillipines classic film - "Giliw Ko".

The "Reviews" section includes reviews of eleven books, and a
provocative piece by Freda Freiberg in appreciation of "Life is
beautiful".

The usual "Trailers" includes information on forthcoming events, calls
for papers for conferences and journals, notices and new titles.

We welcome responses from readers to any of the above.
