I've heard that the voice over was written intentionally poorly so that the
studio wouldn't use it.  However, I highly doubt that any filmmaker would
take that risk and wonder if this wasn't a pr afterthought upon realizing
how cheesy lines like, "Sushi, that's what my wife called me."  really
sounded like.
