I'm not sure what your department chair thought s/he was going to see, but I
liked 12 MONKEYS very much.  I don't think it should be read primarily in
political terms (though they are still important to the film) and it's really
*not* a comedy (there's even less of the kind of uneasy comedy that was in
BRAZIL).  It *is* an interesting adaptation of the elements and development of
the kinds of questions posed in Chris Marker's LA JETEE (which served as an
inspiration for the film).  I also think Madeleine Stowe is extremely good in
her role.
 
Another film you might consider is NIXON, which I *did* dislike, but which
should be a rich source for all kinds of discussions.
