Proposals are invited for a trade book currently in preparation. It is an
anthology of approx 14 short & long articles/chapters interested in images of
disability in popular culture. Diversity among contributors is anticipated:
talented novices as well as published writers; critics, journalists, people
from the academic arena; activists, cultural studies writers,
participants/performers; people who identify in the disability community as
well as TAB (non-d/a) writers.
The book is aimed at general audiences who love to read about movies,
TV, humor, et cetera, as entertainment and as a medium for reflection on
differences and meaning in the USA. It uses constructivist
methods (without needing to call them such), and relies on the social
definition of disability (vs the medical/impairment POV). It explores the
creation/construction of various images, the reception of images, and the
analysis of whose interests are served in each instance.
Sections will treat (list not complete): movies p 1945, TV (drama,
news, talk shows), advertising/ fashion, humor (comic strips and cartoons,
stand-up/sitdown live humor), children's media, disability media proper,
participation of disabled actors/performers, history p 1944.
