I'd like some help on some research I'm doing on travelogues, particularly
with regard to companies specialising in the production of travelogues and
historical/theoretical material on the travelogue outside the UK.
My own research is specifically concerned with Scottish travelogues produced
by the Films of Scotland Committee. Appointed in 1937 by the Scottish
Development Council, the Committee's primary remit was to produce a series
of films on Scottish life for the International Empire Exhibition held in
Glasgow in 1938. The Committee's memebership included John Grierson, and
several of the films were made by members of the GPO film unit.
Terminated during the war, the Films of Scotland Committee was re-appointed
in 1954 and operated under the umbrella of the Scottish Council for
Development and Industry until 1982. The Committee's task was 'to promote
the production and distribution of Scottish films in the national interest,'
its remit 'to project the life and achievement of Scotland.'
The Committee produced over 150 documentaries during its operation, over half of
which were travelogues, but it, and the travelogue in general, are glossed over
or ignored in dominant constructions of the history of British cinema. Did
similar state-initiated travelogue producing committees exist outside of
the UK? I'm sure they must have done. I'd be interested in hearing from
anyone who is familar with such work, and with historical/theoretical material
on the travelogue in general.
Thanks in advance
