Actually, with Manohla Dargis, Ann Hornaday and Lisa Schwarzbaum, there are
at least three very powerful women critics today. I think there was definitely
more in the 1960s such as Pauline Kael, Sheila Benson and Judy Stone.
There should be a lot more, but frankly, critics of color are even more
lacking today. Then again, the concept of a daily film critic is disappearing
rapidly. The previously mentioned Eleanor Ringel Gillispie of Atlanta and Mary Pols
of San Jose were both let go as were dozens of others from around the
country. Sean P. Means has been keeping tabs of all the buyouts and layoffs -- 32 of
them since the beginning of 2006.
