i have to emphatically agree with the response to tony williams
predominantly unjustified burn on quentin tarantino. the respoder,
i forget his name, made reference to the film threat article regarding
quentin's "lifting" from city on fire... perhaps williams has seen the most
recent film threat in which tarantino is confronted with this accusation
at cannes. his response? everything he does is taken from other movies...
is this a crime? there is a saying that what makes a great master of art
is the ability to steal and borrow from other's works while at the same
time making his/her work uncopyable. shakespeare comes to mind.
tarantino makes no secret of his references, he uses them effectively.
and the comment on shoddy direction? i believe williams post might
gain credibility if he included some examples of what he considers
excellent direction, or filmmakers who are not the obvious hacks he
considers tarantino to be. so i guess that's a question... what filmmakers
should be getting all the press if not tarantino? i, for one, am happy to
see the glamourized filmzines taking advantage of the chance to interview
an individual who is both extremely versed in film history and who has a
strong vision for his own work.
