PRESENTATION

This special issue of *1895 revue d’histoire du cinéma*, devoted to the
history of film professions in France up to 1945 and including a DVD, is
published in collaboration with the University of Rennes and with the
support of the French Film Archives-CNC. The aim of this issue is to open
up a largely unexplored field of research, proposing not only case studies
of specific film professions (designer, screenwriter, sound engineer,
composer, etc.) but also more wide-ranging articles about studio hiring
practices, training of actors, trade unions, etc. This issue is accompanied
by a DVD containing 7 rare films that show this important off-screen
dimension of the film industry.
