NOTICE & CALL FOR PAPERS
 
Malcolm Lowry, author of _Under the Volcano_ (1947), was the subject of a
1976 NFB documentary film by Donald Britten called _Volcano_; his novel
was adapted to the screen by director John Huston; and Lowry, with his
with Margerie, wrote a screen play of _Tender is the Night_ (edited by
Miguel Mota & Paul Tiessen, 1990).
 
We invites film scholars to participate in the 1997 Malcolm Lowry
Symposium!

          THE 1997 MALCOLM LOWRY SYMPOSIUM
     An International Conference and Celebration
 
                University of Toronto
                   11-15 June 1997
 
 
The 1997 Lowry Symposium will meet on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the publication of _Under the Volcano_.  Special
sessions will include keynote speaker Dr Sherrill Grace, University
of British Columbia, editor of _Sursum Corda! The Collected
Letters of Malcolm Lowry_ and Dr Christopher Ackerley, Otago
University, New Zealand, co-author of the _Companion to Under the
Volcano_.
 
We plan to include in the conference fee a one-day excursion to
the beautiful, historic village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where
Lowry was living and working in 1944-45, and where he declared
that he had finished writing _Under the Volcano_.
 
We invite proposals for scholarly papers on all aspects of the
life and work of Malcolm Lowry, and related topics.  Outlines and
abstracts should be sent to the organisers at the address below
by 31 July 1996.

June, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the publication
