Thank you, Warren.  Lean was fine on "smaller" films (like BRIEF ENCOUNTER
and GREAT EXPECTATIONS), but let the epic carry him away, especially after
LAWRENCE.
 
I asked on CINEMA-L if anyone knows whether Merchant-Ivory-Prahbvala ever
had an option on PASSAGE TO INDIA.  A pity that Lean got it, despite some
good performances and pretty pictures.  The ending alone guts Forster's
most important message: "Only connect--but sometimes it's impossible."
