Call for Papers for Proposed Panel
Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference—March
6-10, 2013—Chicago, IL
Panel Subject:Celebrity and Surveillance

This proposed panel begins from the assumption that over the last ten years, celebrity and surveillance have transformed into two linked modes of self-fashioning. Sites such as Gawkerstalker, apps such as Grindr and social networking media like Twitter all stem from an increased capacity to both locate and project the self and others. These modes are both integral to and stem from a destabilization of the divide between public and private spaces and behaviors. Furthermore, these modes are formed out of contemporary film, television and social media. The proposed panel seeks papers that depart from the extant literature on both celebrity and surveillance—which has exhaustively examined both phenomena in isolation—by considering the multiple ways in which they are now inextricably intertwined.

Paper topics could include:
·       The formation of celebrity and surveillance through social networking
·       Cults of personality in Hollywood and totalitarian states
·       Andy Warhol and his superstars
·       Privacy, publicity, flanerie and the mass mediatization of contemporary architecture

Please send a 250-word abstract and a brief biographical note to Margot Bouman, [log in to unmask] July 27, 2012. Text pasted into the body of an email is preferred over an attached Word document. Selections for the panel will be made by August 17, 2012.
