There's a BFI reader devoted entirely to Groundhog Day. And my mother
(Lucina Paquet) appeared in a couple of scenes in the film. The most
interesting revelation from her is that the original script EXPLAINED why
the Murray character was reliving the same day. His ex-girl friend, a
witch, had put a spell on him. Ultimately, everyone agreed that it would
be better to leave the matter unexplained.

Cheers,
      krin

I don't know of any major analysis, but I have a vague recollection of a
Lacanian analysis of the film somewhere - perhaps by Slavoj Zizek?
