BLACK HISTORY
25 Movies; Sundays

In recognition of Black History Month, TCM offers an exploration of the
African-American experience on film, ranging from the first all-black
studio production, MGM's Hallelujah! (1929) to a birthday tribute on
February 20 to contemporary superstar Sidney Poitier, including his
Oscar-winning performance in Lilies of the Field (1963). We salute the
incomparable Lena Horne with two of her early films, Duke Is Tops (1942)
and Cabin in the Sky (1943). The latter film, directed by Vincente
Minnelli, was an exception among Horne's MGM musicals of the period in that
she played a leading role instead of making a cameo appearance that could
be deleted if Southern film exhibitors objected.

*The Duke Is Tops* was released in 1938, not 1942.
