Terry Gilliam was originally influenced by Stan Vanderbeek, the underground
experimental film maker. Before building his moviedrome, animating on
computers in 1967 and projecting on steam, Vanderbeek made brilliant politcal
satire films using cut-out animation in the 50's and 60's. These films are
available from the New York Filmmaker's Coop, the MoMA, the London
Filmmakers' Co-op, Light Cone Paris, etc.
Today many many filmmakers still work with cutout animation. A recent notable
example is "Altair" by Lewis Klahr.
