This is an especially interesting case.
 
There was a Broadway play when I was in grade school, I believe it had a
black cast but in the late forties it was impossible to make a black-cast
film for general audiences so Paulette Goddard and John Ireland did that
one.  The remake starred Eartha Kitt.
