Call for Papers/Presentations: Colonial House: Historical Reality vs.
Reality TV

The Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association: October 29 ˇV
30, 2004

Location: Newbury College, Brookline, Mass.
Attention: Film, History and Culture Scholars (including Graduate Students)

PBS has just concluded its latest reality television production ˇ§Colonial
Houseˇ¨ to a series of mixed reviews and controversy. Following the
tradition established by previous historical home series, 1900 House (2000);
Frontier House (2002): Manor House (2003) Colonial House displayed the angst
and conflict inherent with modern day adventurers caught between historical
reality and reality TV. Colonial House captivated general audiences and
stirred debate among scholars interested in the trials and tribulations of
ˇ§time travelersˇ¨ taking up the challenges living in replicated historical
settings.

The Colonial House area welcomes topics that may include but are not limited
to:

"X Gender/race/societal challenges the TV colonists faced
"X The role of or lack of religiosity among the colonists
"X Hierarchical challenges/issues
"X Comparisons with other PBS Historical Homes series
