Position Overview Applications are invited from suitably qualified
persons for a Lectureship in the Media Studies programme of the School of
English and Media Studies. The programme teaches papers in internal and
extramural (teaching at a distance) delivery modes, at both undergraduate
and graduate levels. This is a permanent, full-time position, based in
Palmerston North.
The Schoolıs undergraduate programme includes papers in film, television,
popular music, advertising, visual culture, new media, as well as literary
studies, academic writing, creative writing and performance drama. The
graduate programme focuses on media and literary studies and has a strong
research emphasis. Teaching at graduate level is currently expanding its
extramural offerings.
Applicants are expected to have a sound background in Media Studies and be
able to provide leadership for introductory courses. In addition, applicants
will be expected to teach in one or more of the following areas: new media,
popular music, advertising, visual culture, and gender.
The successful applicant will have a PhD either completed or near completion
at the time of application. Some university teaching experience and academic
publication or other evidence of ongoing research capacity will be expected.

Job Description
Purpose Statement To contribute to the teaching and research of Media
Studies on the Palmerston North campus.
Responsible To Head of School
Key Accountability Areas Teaching/Supervision
1. Undertake undergraduate and (when possible) postgraduate teaching.
2. Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses.
3. Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects.
4. Supervise the research activities of undergraduate students and, when the
possibility arises, assist with the supervision of students/research
projects at a postgraduate level.
5. Undertake continuing personal professional development.
Research
1. Undertake an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme
or participate in team-based research.
2. Publish papers or other scholarly works in academic journals and review
papers.
3. Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences.
4. Generate research funding.
Service to the Community
1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the
profession or field and which are consistent with the Universityıs Charter
and Investment Plan.
2. Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the
obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Person Specification
Qualifications Relevant Masters or PhD qualification.
Experience Demonstrated teaching and research expertise.
Attributes and Skills Competence in teaching, student assessment and
preparation of teaching materials at undergraduate and/or postgraduate
level.
Clear commitment to ongoing development of personal and professional
scholarship in areas consistent with the strategic direction of the School.
Competence in undertaking research utilising one or more research
methodologies.
Ability to offer analysis, critique and professional advice in relation to
issues of concern in his/her field of expertise.
Competence in effective administrative practices consistent with
School/College policy.
