Victor Bachy, professeur emerite a l'universite de Louvain in Belgium, was
the first academic to teach cinema studies in Belgium, and perhaps in all
of Europe.  He told me that cinema studies developed out of the cinephile
clubs of the 40s, but I do not know what year he began teaching.
