Howard K. Smith actually carved out quite a sideline career portraying
himself in
films and television.  Those I recall are:
 
  "The Best Man"  (1964, Henry Fonda)
   "The Man"  (1972, James Earl Jones, Martin Balsam)
   "The Pink Panther Stikes Again"  (1976, Peter Sellers)
    "The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper"  (1981, Robert Duvall, Treat Williams)
   "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"  (1982, Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton)
    "V"  (1984 TV series, Marc Singer, Faye Grant)  - HKS opened each
episode,
     as himself,  telecasting a news brief from the "Freedom Fighters'
Network"
 
There may have been some others as well, where he portrayed a newscommentator
with a fictitious name (a "Night of the Living Dead" sequel perhaps?).
