     I know this is old hat...but 4 Steps in the Clouds, the original novel
has strong  political undertones.  The novel is said to have strong fasist
leanings.  Something that makes since the main framework of the story
involves  stong patriarchal family
values revolving around the importance of legitement childbirth (and
motherhood) and marriage.
     Arau doesn't seem to chance that part of it all to much however how he
portrays colonial mexician culture is shocking since it's the gringo that is
of a "lower" class.
