I read a novel called "Was" that I think is relevant.  I thought it was a fasci
nating novel; unfortunately I forgot the author's name.  It has a number of
threads, all relating to The Wizard of Oz film and book.  In one thread, a man
dying of AIDS goes to Kansas to track down information on the real Dorothy,
about whom he is obsessed.
