I think the film pointed out that these successess  were not meaningful
to Gump. Throughout the film he talks of his love for Jenny and how he
never understood the hoopla over his athletic, military, or financial
'success'. The simple things in life gave him pleasure the other things were
window dressing. This is apparent throughout the film. Kristi =)
