Apropos Paul, try (if you haven't already) Michael Chanan, "The Dream that
 Kicks" (2nd ed.,
Routledge, 1996) and Noel Burch, "Life to those Shadows" (BFI 1991).  Both are
 general histories
of precinema and early cinema in Britain - so you're probably very familiar with
 them - but Paul is
discussed in some detail, particularly by Chanan.
