Public Service Broadcasting Beyond 2000:
Serving the Public in a Digital Age
Organized by Cultural Industries Research Centre, University of Alberta
in conjunction with the Banff Television Festival

Public service broadcasters around the world are faced with declining
budgets, audience fragmentation, debate over their proper role, all at a
time of rapid technological advance in distribution technology. This
conference will bring together academics from around the world who are
engaged in research on television during this critical period of
convergence and digitalization.
It will provide a means for communication of research findings to industry
and government leaders from around the world as well as a forum for
industry/government/regulatory sector participants to actively engage the
research community in debate on the research findings and policy issues
identified.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Speakers are invited to submit proposals for papers to be presented at the
conference. Papers may be written from any disciplinary perspective, and
should address issues relating to public service broadcasting.
If you are interested in presenting a paper or organizing a special
session, please supply a brief abstract (300-500 words). Closing date for
abstracts is November 30, 1999. An editorial committee will assess
submissions.
Please note: if your submission is successful, you will be eligible for a
50% discount on registration fees.
Completed papers submitted by June 30, 2000 will be considered for
publication in a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication.
These completed papers should be limited to 4,000 to 6,000 words.

Your paper may qualify for publication in a special issue of the Canadian
Journal of Communication.
This conference will be held just prior to the Banff Television Festival.
You will be able to meet with other academics, industry leaders,
government officials and regulators to discuss the future of public
service broadcasting. With a separate registration you will be able to
stay on and attend the Banff Television Festival. You can find out more

It will be economical and convenient to attend both this conference, and
the biennial meeting of the Association of Cultural Economics
International in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 28-31 on the same trip.
The conference venue, the Banff Centre, is a resort destination located in
