CFP: Local Film Exhibition and Theater Preservation

24th Southwest/Texas Popular Culture/American Culture Conference
Albuquerque Hilton
Albuquerque, New Mexico
February 13-17, 2003

The movie business would be out-of-business without exhibitors and the movie
theaters that screen the Hollywood product or films from around the world.
This area
focuses on the importance of film exhibition in local venues beyond large,
metropolitan locales and the importance of preserving picture palaces, both
large and small. Papers may reflect a historical approach, a cultural
analysis, or discuss the business of film exhibition.

Theater preservationists will have an opportunity to explain the importance
of their
work and describe the pitfalls that come with such projects. Local case
histories of
preservation work are particularly welcome, as well as research and analysis
of the role
of movies as entertainment, civic hub, and social force in local communities.

TOPICS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Film exhibition history: local, regional, and national
International film exhibition
Challenges in film exhibition: now and in the future
The economic, social, and cultural significance of film exhibition
Movie theaters and community identity
Theater preservation: case studies
Theater architecture and interior design
Refreshment concessions and the moviegoing experience

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Send a 250-word abstract and brief biographical
information to the area chair listed below by December 10, 2002. Panel
presentations of 3-4 speakers, roundtable sessions, or alternative formats
are encouraged, but all submissions are welcome. Audiovisual needs (VCR,
monitor, 16mm slide projector, overhead projector, etc.) should be included
with your proposal.

ALL INQUIRIES, INCLUDING PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS, SHOULD BE SENT TO:
