CALL FOR PAPERS
CFP: Rebels and Revolutionaries
An area of multiple panels for the 2016 Film & History Conference:
Gods and Heretics: Figures of Power and Subversion in Film and Television
October 26-October 30, 2016
The Milwaukee Hilton
Milwaukee, WI (USA)

DEADLINE for abstracts: June 1, 2016

AREA: Rebels and Revolutionaries

This area seeks presentations that examine screen depictions of rebellion and revolution throughout history. Presentations may focus on the nature of the revolts, or on those who lead and conduct them, from the rebellious sailors in Potemkin, the Roman slaves of the Hollywood epic Spartacus, and the Algerian independence fighters in Battle of Algiers, to the African-American radicals portrayed in last year’s documentary Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution and the women mill workers fighting for voting rights in The Suffragette. The area views rebellion and revolution as broadly defined, from national liberation struggles to social justice and labor movements.

How do rebels and revolutionaries use cinema to advance their cause? Who creates and controls the narratives and images of rebellion and those associated with it? As socio-historical changes occur and time advances, how do these affect the portrayals of rebels’ and revolutionaries’ targets, the portrayals of their goals, and the changing representations of rebellious figures themselves? Also of interest are questions of distribution and spectatorship, including the impact and effect of such portrayals.

Proposals for complete panels (three related presentations) are also welcome, but they must include an abstract and contact information, including an e-mail address, for each presenter. For updates and registration information about the upcoming meeting, see the Film & History website (www.filmandhistory.org).

Please e-mail your 200-word proposal by 1 June 2016 to the area chairs:
