i'm a little dismayed by the turn the contributions to this thread
have been taking . . . i would have thought that the original query
focused on the "ghost" as a representation of a very specific
thematic: the liminal, the uncanny, the over-the-rainbow . . . in
other words the ghost as figuring something roughly in the
neighborhood of the transcendent or sublime

now certainly there are many ghosts that do not do this work at
all -- caspar being just the most obvious instance . . . i suspect
that listing every movie ever made with a ghost in it serves no
purpose in helping to come to terms with what is at stake is using
this trope
