Call for Papers: The Bond Girls: Sex and the Secret Agent
2010 Film & History Conference: Representations of Love in Film and History
November 11-14, 2010
Hyatt Regency Milwaukee

Second Round Deadline: November 1, 2009

AREA: The Bond Girls: Sex and the Secret Agent

Throughout the 50 year history of James Bond, the Bond Girl has evolved into a quintessential American sex symbol. Seductive, stunning, bold, and brazen, the women of Bond films are among the most interesting females in film - self-confident, capable, and sexually assured. From the first image of Honey Ryder rising from the sea in her sexy bikini in Dr. No to secret agent Jinx duplicating the same shot in Die Another Day, the Bond Girls have had a lasting impact on 007, on the lives of the actresses who played them, and on our cinematic fantasies of sexuality and romance.

Eternally attractive, the Bond Girl is often critiqued as limited and stereotyped - little more than a superficial sexpot in a bikini. However, from the beginning, Bond Girls have been strong independent women and professionals of many stripes (spies, astronauts, scientists, pilots, etc.). While the character of James Bond has remained somewhat static, Bond Girls have evolved from decade to decade, in roles reinvented to reflect and perhaps, shape, their times. This area seeks to examine the phenomena of the Bond Girl, as object and agent, ally and adversary, in the male-defined world of Agent 007.

Possibilities for examination include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

*	The Girls of various Bonds and eras
*	The changing portrayals of promiscuity in Bond films
*	The de-sexualization of the Bond Girl .
*	Bond Girls as reflections of the evolving image of femininity
*	The Bond Girl as contrasting figure of the end of the frigid fifties and the beginning of the sexually charged sixties
*	Bond Girls as love objects and mother figures.
*	The Bond films' glorification of male chauvinism.
*	The relationship between man, woman, and nature as portrayed in Bond films.
