There is a fantastic French film on deafness, *Dand le pays des sourds*
(In the Land of the Deaf), which was screened at the Film Forum in NYC
during 1994. It deals with deafness through the perspective of the
subjects, mostly in the context of a Parisian school for the hearing
impared. You MUST see this film.
