well, gloryoski zero, thanks for all the help, screen-ellers. i know why i
didn't know the answer to that question: the b****y book is too expensive
to be at any of the libraries _I'VE_ ever been to.
here's the scoop:

Hurst, Walter and William Storm Hale. _Film superlist: 20,000 motion pictures
in the U.S. public domain._ Hollywood, CA: 7 Arts Press, (1986?), 1973.
the ISBN number is 0911370102 and the OCLC number is 11968641. the price
  WAS $150.00.

Hurst, Walter E. _Film superlist: motion pictures in the U.S. public domain,
1940-1949._ Updated ed. edited by D. Richard Baer. Hollywood, CA:
  Hollywood Film Archive, 1992.
the ISBN number is 0913616273 and the OCLC number is 25549265. the price
  is $345.00.

Hurst, Walter E. _Film superlist: motion pictures in the U.S. public domain,
  1950-1959._ Hollywood, CA: 7 Arts press, 1989.
the ISBN number is 0911370730 and the OCLC number is 20296279. the price is
  $500.00.

these publications are part of the "Entertainment industry series," and the
ISSN number for the series is 0071-0695. according to what i saw during my
OCLC search, very few libraries across the country have these volumes. a note
for OCLC #11968641 reads "Reprints with emendations of Library of Congress
Copyright Office cumulative copyright catalog of motion pictures, 1894-1939 and
legal documents."
if any of you have these volumes in your academic library, please let me
know. i'd like to know what instructions for use they give.

thanks for this lead (that's "lead" as in clue, not "lead" as in "...pipe
cinch.")
