The best known (and best as films) are Johnny Belinda and the recentish The
Piano. Also The Spiral Staircase.

The Trap (Rita Tushingham is quite affecting in this underrated film)
Persona (but not a *real* or congenital mute) The Object of Beauty
(interesting, neglected movie where the mute has supporting role)

Ruby, a so-so movie

Also check the Mexican Santa Sangre, wild, grotesque, very good (depending
on your taste and religious convictions)
