Recently on German television there was a report on the success of
_Schindler's List_ in the States. It was followed by a look back at a
documentary made in 1965 (?) when Schindler was "discovered" in his native
country by a film-maker who had stumbled upon a tree in his honor in the
Yad Va'shem forest in Israel. It seems that while he was a celebrated
hero in Israel, few people had ever heard of him at home. After the war,
the commentary continued, Schindler was unable or unwilling to find his
place in the Federal Republic of the "Wirtschaftswunder." The images from
the mid-60's show an anonymous, isolated person in crowded Frankfurt
street scenes. He apparently died quite poor and was buried in Israel.
Spielberg's film opens here at the end of the month.
