CFP: THE HISPANIC WEST IN FILM AND TV (8/15; 11/7-10/2002)
Film & History Conference on the American Wests in Film, TV, and History
Kansas City Marriott, Kansas City, MO
November 7-10, 2002
Please join the Film & History Journal for its annual conference in Kansas
City and consider giving a paper in the area of the "Hispanic West." Latin
American and Latino peoples have played a central role in the history of
the US West. Hollywood's portrayals of the Hispanic West, however, have
often relegated Latino characters to secondary and stereotypical roles.
The conference solicits a broad range of papers related to the cinematic
images of Latinos both in the US West as well as in Hollywood "westerns"
set in Latin America. Prospective panels include, but are not limited to,
-- Overviews of Hollywood's Latin Images
-- Latino History According to Hollywood
-- Film and TV Series: Zorro, Cisco Kid, etc.
-- Contemporary Chicano Images: American Me, Mi Familia, Salena, etc.
-- Hispanics in Hollywood Westerns: Stagecoach (1939), The Wild Bunch
-- Westerns South of the Border: Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948),
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
-- Border Films: Touch of Evil (1958), Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982),
Lone Star (1996)
-- Immigration Films: El Norte (1983), Born in East LA (1987)
-- Steinbeck's Latinos: Tortilla Flat (1942), The Pearl (1947), Viva
-- A Medal for Benny (1945)
-- Salt of the Earth (1953)
-- Trial (1955)
-- Giant (1956)
-- The Alamo (1960)
