My favourite pedagogic illustration of the concept of diegetic/non-
extra-diegetic sound is from Mel Brook's *High Anxiety* : the car
speeding along the highway with the two lovers romantically together,
underscored by string music - then a busload of violin-playing
musicians is seen overtaking the car with the lovers - hilarious -
and what's more: after seeing that one the students will never forget
the distinction between diegetic and non-diegetic sound!
