Blaine Allan makes a very good suggestion about Delmore Schwartz as a
fiction writer who refers to the movies. In fact, the title story in the
volume "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities" finds the protagonist in a movie
theater where his parents' courtship and early married life is playing out
on the screen. The son feels that he recognizes the flaw in his parents'
blindness to the present as they focus on the future, but of course he is
only an observer of this scene and remains helpless to do anything about
it. He gets hysterical and is actually kicked out of the theater. The
psychological situation here is complex and well worth exploring in a
discussion of fiction and film.
